Hoops 4 Health
Timmy Duggan OAM, a proud Warumungu and Nyikina man from Darwin, is a trailblazer in Australian basketball and a dedicated advocate for First Nations empowerment. In 1996, he made history as the first Northern Territorian to play in the National Basketball League (NBL), representing the Gold Coast Rollers and later the Cairns Taipans.
Beyond his achievements on the court, Timmy has devoted his career to creating positive change through consistent advocacy of First Nations Health and Well-Being. In 2002, he founded Hoops 4 Health, a nationally recognized initiative that uses basketball as a tool for social and emotional well-being. What began in Cairns has grown into a First Nations-led program that delivers youth services, mentoring, and financial well-being support, all under the framework of Healing-Centred Sport Through a First Nations Lens. His work has impacted thousands of young people, particularly in remote communities, and in 2023 Hoops 4 Health was honoured with the National Rural and Remote Health Award.
